MESSAGE OF THE STATE OF KUWAIT ON THE SUBMISSION OF KUWAIT’S 2019 SDGS VOLUNTARY NATIONAL REVIEW
Prior to adoption of Sustainable Development Goals, the State of Kuwait achieved Millennium Development Goals, realising concrete successes in ending poverty & hunger, providing universal education and closing gender gap in education and in other walks of life. It had attained universal healthcare, achieved admirable health indicators of infant, child, & maternal mortality, and ensured extensive water and sanitation services. Kuwait had also made important strides in economic, and social development while paying significant attention to the environment and maintaining unwavering commitment to global partnership and international solidarity.
The State of Kuwait officially adopted SDGs in September 2015, and took a decision reflecting all Goals: strategically and substantively in first national development plan of Kuwait Vision 2035; including SDGs within the national institutional development framework, and its plans, budget and national governance structure; engaging government entities, civil society, private sector and other stakeholders at the policy, and institutional levels, allocating resources for advocacy and consensus building.
Establishing National Sustainable Development Committee (NSDC) and National Observatory on Sustainable Development (NOSD) were critical parts of integrated institutional efforts to roll out the SDGs Agenda as a national participatory undertaking. The General Secretariat of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development (GSSCPD) together with Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) organised over thirteen national workshops, targeting over sixty-six entities from government, non-government and private sector partners. The workshops offered an opportunity to discuss & define SDGs priorities in the national context, interact with stakeholders on their respective roles in achieving SDGs, and mainstreaming goals and targets within the quinquennial Kuwait National Development Plan (2015-2020).
The Government of Kuwait has significantly invested in national awareness raising on transformative scope of Agenda 2030 and its ultimate purpose of “leaving no one behind”. While setting strategic paths to overcome challenges, including strengthening the role of private sector, reducing dominance of oil sector on the economy, balancing public budget, creating conditions for reinvigorated direct foreign investments and improving infrastructure, the State of Kuwait has implemented strategic development projects for achieving relevant SDGs and their targets.
AUM became a full member in CMS at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) on June 28, 2019, after receiving an overwhelming vote at the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) Collaboration Board at the CERN council in Geneva, Switzerland.
CERN is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory and one of the most respected centers for scientific research. It is located on the border between Switzerland and France and has two main research sites: Meyrin on the Swiss side and Prevessin on the French side.
On June 28 2019, The American University of the Middle East became a full member in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) collaboration at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), after receiving an overwhelming majority from the CMS Collaboration Board in the vote that took place at the CERN council on June 28, 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Established in 1954, CERN organization is based in a northwest suburb of Geneva on the Franco–Swiss border and is an official United Nations Observer. Since its creation, CERN has historically been a major hub for scientific and technological achievements. CERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
CERN has two main research sites: Meyrin located in the Swiss side, and Prevessin located in the French one. Current and future main CERN research program is centered around the LHC (Large Hadron Collider, world largest particle accelerator with 27 km of circumference, located 100 meters underground) and two main research experiments: CMS and ATLAS, who were both responsible for the discovery of the Higgs Boson, awarded with the 2013 Noble prize in physics.
AUM is the first institution in Kuwait and the Gulf region to become officially a full member of CMS. This membership will benefit not only the faculty members and students of AUM, but also the Kuwait and GCC community at large.
CMS collaboration represents one of the most advanced and promising research communities in the world, with more than 3000 scientist, engineers and students from 200 institutions around the world. AUM is actively contributing to the upgrade of the CMS detector which is planned to start taking data in 2020 with a promising and exciting research program, such as discovering new particles, investigating extra dimensions, origin of dark matter etc.
We are proud of our students for winning the first place in the International Robotex Competition.
AUM hosts the “Higher Education Summit for a Meaningful Future” for universities in the Middle East and Africa region, at the AUM Conference Center, in the presence of elite academics and leaders in the field of higher education from all over the world.

AUM is committed to reducing carbon emissions by systematically tracking and analyzing its carbon footprint to develop the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Programs on campus. The current GHG emission reduction programs implemented at AUM fall under scopes 2 and 3.
In scope 2, efforts to reduce purchased electricity and energy costs are undergoing with the use of energy-efficient appliances, cloud computing, and IT systems with lower energy consumption.
As for scope 3, two main emission sources are considered in the reduction programs: waste management and commuting.
AUM liaises with local organizations and companies to handle recyclable materials and maximizes efforts to reduce and manage all kinds of waste. Learn more
Moreover, AUM campus set up is designed with all buildings on the sides, thus creating a rectangular frame and leaving a very spacious open area in the center that offers to the community a green and car-free environment. Zero-emission and electric shuttles are available for journeys within the campus and there are designated tracks for pedestrians, runners, cyclists, and zero-emission vehicles. Furthermore, common transportation is available for a group of staff members and some faculty and staff members carpool together.
In December 2022, AUM has been ranked as the most Sustainable and Green University in Kuwait for the third year running, by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2022. Compared to the previous year, AUM advanced 31 places to #237 worldwide, and made it to the Top 5 Most Sustainable and Green Universities in the Gulf and #16 in the Arab countries. The UI GreenMetric ranks universities around the world based on their commitment and actions toward sustainability as per the following distinct categories: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education and Research.
