SDG 1: End Poverty in all its Forms
1.4.4 Policy Addressing Poverty
Policy on Addressing Poverty
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) is actively contributing to the Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) that calls for an end to poverty in all its forms everywhere. This policy covers the university various initiatives and programs that aim to alleviate poverty and promote social-economic well-being, addressing the root causes of deprivation, the long-term solutions and any immediate needs for poverty reduction.
In Kuwait, despite the prosperous economy, there are still pockets of vulnerability and socio-economic disparities. AUM acknowledges the importance of addressing these issues to create a more equitable society. The university has taken several steps to contribute to SDG 1:
Community Development: AUM encourages its students to engage with local communities through humanitarian acts, volunteering and outreach programs. By collaborating with local NGOs and participating in community development projects, students gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized groups and contribute directly to poverty reduction efforts.
Economic Empowerment: AUM provides financial assistance to individuals in need (e.g. economic losses due to disasters), and supports educational, innovation and research activities promoting poverty reduction through grants and capacity-building programs.
Entrepreneurship and Employability: AUM promotes entrepreneurship and skill development for local start-up assistance through its curriculum and extracurricular activities. By equipping students with relevant skills and encouraging innovation, the university supports access to quality education at all levels, the creation of sustainable livelihoods and job opportunities aligned with market demands to improve employability, which is essential to poverty reduction.
Scholarships and Financial Aid: AUM provides scholarships and financial aid opportunities to students from diverse backgrounds. By ensuring that education is accessible to all, regardless of their financial circumstances, the university empowers individuals to break the cycle of poverty and contribute meaningfully to society.
Education for Sustainable Development: AUM integrates the principles of sustainable development across its curriculum. By educating students about the interconnection of economic, social, and environmental factors, the university prepares future leaders who can address the root causes of poverty, improve access to basic services and drive positive change.
Healthcare Access and Social Protection: AUM ensures that its community members have access to affordable and accessible healthcare. The university ensures food security programs and awareness campaigns on campus and beyond.
Research and Advocacy: The university engages in research that addresses issues related to poverty, inequality, and social welfare in Kuwait and the world. Through academic studies, conferences, and public discourse, AUM contributes to raising awareness about the importance of tackling poverty and promoting evidence-based policies.
Partnerships and Collaborations: AUM collaborates with government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses in Kuwait to develop comprehensive strategies for poverty reduction. By pooling resources and expertise, these partnerships amplify the impact of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for vulnerable populations.
Monitoring and Evaluation: AUM conducts regular assessments to measure the effectiveness of poverty reduction related initiatives.
In summary, AUM recognizes that achieving SDG 1 requires a multifaceted approach that involves education, empowerment, advocacy, and collaboration. By leveraging its resources and influence, the university is contributing to the national efforts aimed at eradicating poverty and building a more just and inclusive society in Kuwait.
