AUM collaborated with SLB to host The Sustainability Village on November 9 and 10, 2022. A sustainability mini walk-through experience linked with a number of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals and local sustainability goals. The purpose behind the project is to showcase the importance of these topics to the modern-day Kuwaiti Household.
One of the three main booths was “Energy Consumption – In Our Typical Modern Kuwaiti Household” in addition to the other two booths: “Waste Management Booth” and “Health and Wellbeing”. The booth was designed in an interactive way that would encourage individuals to participate and experience how sustainability and especially energy consumption can make a difference in their lives.
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) participated as a main sponsor in the first Kuwait Electric Road Show that took place at Murooj on December 2, 3, and 4.
Titled “Green Kuwait”, the main purpose behind the event is to support cleaner energy and reduce carbon emissions by spreading awareness about the new electric and hybrid vehicles available in Kuwait.
AUM Spokesperson and Executive Manager, Massar Bineid, announced to the media during the event: “We are present at the Electric Vehicles Show in Al-Morouj to support innovative projects related to alternative energy and renewable energy, as the implementation of such projects is beneficial for sustainable development, the economy, and the environment. At AUM, we embrace this approach as we integrate sustainability into all activities, especially teaching, academic research, and students’ projects and activities.”
“We also took this opportunity to highlight graduation projects done by our students that are related to the theme of the show and innovation at large. It is also worth noting that we have a second booth located at the entrance that is solar-powered.” She added.
AUM students were present at the event in their dedicated booth where they interacted with visitors and showcased graduation projects related to sustainable development and alternative and renewable energy. An example of the projects that were displayed during the event are highlighted hereunder:
WifiBot lane detection algorithm
This project demonstrates a Self-Driving Lane Detection technique. It uses Image Processing to detect the appropriate features of a road and estimates the curve present on this road. This curve value can be used to steer the vehicle in the correct direction.
Long-range Communication with Drone
The project is about using an industrial scale aerial-drone for long-range communication capability for data transfer in search and rescue operations in an environment without GPS communication. The drone will also be installed with a soft-gripping mechanism, which is used to collect samples.
Small Solar Cars
Small scale solar rovers that run using solar power in a designed track.
Balloon based small satellites network for secure communication
This project proposes a cost-efficient solution to link areas with limited coverage to existing communication networks. The idea is to use a network of balloon-based small cube satellites that enable the transfer of communication signals from one point to another point in a secure way.
Bionic Arm for Amputee Cases
A customizable wearable robust 3D printed bionic arm has been designed and implemented for a right arm amputee case. The hand is controlled using Electromyography signals (Muscles Sensors). An artificial Intelligent algorithm is used to precisely control hand actions.
Super Anthony Fighter Robot
Two manual controlled super Anthony robots that allow users to experience controlling a humanoid robot in a sumo match.
During Fall semester 2022, AUM Young Inventors Students Club organized a full day of academic activities focused on the theme of Sustainability with competitions and prizes. This event tackled Biofuel production through fermentation.
The Green Energy club is dedicated to addressing the challenges of climate change and promoting sustainable and green energy solutions that lead to a greener and more resilient future. We believe in the power of collaboration and collective action to make a difference in the fight against climate change. The club aims to provide the students with the opportunity to apply their engineering design and project management skills as well as theoretical knowledge in a challenging competition. It also aims to increase awareness of the importance of renewable energy sources for the environment and the economy.
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) welcomed National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) at the AUM Cultural Center on November 16-17 and 23-24 as part of the AUM Career day initiatives.
NBK offered over 100 full-time and part-time job opportunities, targeting AUM students and alumni for different positions at the bank’s branches and headquarter. A professional recruitment team from NBK held on-spot interviews with students and alumni.
During the events, NBK displayed a Tesla car beside the lake where students got the chance to explore it and learn more about the advantages of electric cars and their positive impact on climate change. It was most interesting for Electrical and Mechanical Engineering students who put a lot of focus in their graduation projects on creating innovative projects that find solutions to real-world problems using renewable energy.
On the occasion of World Environment Day, the American University of the Middle East (AUM) organized a competition among students and alumni to encourage them to think in a more environmentally friendly way and come up with creative solutions that can make the campus more sustainable.
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to keep the environment top of mind among people, and to remind them that nature should not be taken for granted and must be respected for its values.
Students and alumni submitted their ideas through written reports and videos where they came up with creative solutions that can reduce the carbon footprint of university campuses.
As part of AUM’s approach to sustainability, the university will be exploring the implementation of these ideas and initiatives with students and alumni in the future.
Certification of participation and plants were distributed to all participants, in addition to prizes to the top three winners: Danah Afat, Ayah Sharaf, and Ali Hashem.
AUM is committed to reducing carbon emissions by systematically tracking and analyzing its carbon footprint to develop the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Programs on campus. The current GHG emission reduction programs implemented at AUM fall under scopes 2 and 3.
In scope 2, efforts to reduce purchased electricity and energy costs are undergoing with the use of energy-efficient appliances, cloud computing, and IT systems with lower energy consumption.
As for scope 3, two main emission sources are considered in the reduction programs: waste management and commuting.
AUM liaises with local organizations and companies to handle recyclable materials and maximizes efforts to reduce and manage all kinds of waste. Learn more
Moreover, AUM campus set up is designed with all buildings on the sides, thus creating a rectangular frame and leaving a very spacious open area in the center that offers to the community a green and car-free environment. Zero-emission and electric shuttles are available for journeys within the campus and there are designated tracks for pedestrians, runners, cyclists, and zero-emission vehicles. Furthermore, common transportation is available for a group of staff members and some faculty and staff members carpool together.
The American University of the Middle East became a full member in CMS at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) on June 28, 2019, after receiving an overwhelming vote at the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) Collaboration Board at the CERN council in Geneva, Switzerland.
AUM is the first institution in Kuwait and the Gulf region to become a full member of CMS. This new milestone will benefit not only the faculty members and students of AUM, but also the Kuwait and GCC community at large.
CERN is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory and one of the most respected centers for scientific research. It is located on the border between Switzerland and France and has two main research sites: Meyrin on the Swiss side and Prevessin on the French side.
The main CERN research activities are centered around the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) and two particle detection facilities, CMS and ATLAS. Both CMS and ATLAS announced in 2012 the discovery of the Higgs Boson predicted by Peter Higgs and François Englert in 1964. The two scientists were awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics.
CMS will carry out a new exciting research program after finalizing the general upgrade, in which AUM is currently involved, and will restart in 2020. Dr. Yasser Maghrbi, Assistant Professor at AUM’s College of Engineering and Technology, is participating in the research activities.
This full membership will allow AUM faculty members and students to benefit from the scientific innovations and technical expertise provided by CERN, to implement advanced scientific research projects that contribute to developments in the fields of science and engineering and technology for the benefit of the Kuwaiti society.
In December 2022, AUM has been ranked as the most Sustainable and Green University in Kuwait for the third year running, by UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2022. Compared to the previous year, AUM advanced 31 places to #237 worldwide, and made it to the Top 5 Most Sustainable and Green Universities in the Gulf and #16 in the Arab countries.The UI GreenMetric ranks universities around the world based on their commitment and actions toward sustainability as per the following distinct categories: Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, and Education and Research.
The theme of UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2022 focused on “Collective Actions for Transforming Sustainable Universities in the Post-Pandemic Time”. Being recognized as one of the most sustainable universities in the region reflects AUM’s commitment to greening its campus, equipping students with business ethics, and engaging with the sustainable development goals through education, research, and social responsibility initiatives.
