Reproductive Health-Care Services for Students
These services are offered through the health-care services and the on-campus clinics, counseling, awareness campaigns that offer information and education and collaborations with health institutions.
AUM has an agreement with Dar Al Shifa Hospital, one of the most renowned hospitals in Kuwait, to provide medical staff and registered nurses from their Emergency Department (ER) Department for AUM Central Clinic, in addition to collaborations to raise awareness on health issues among students. We note that Dar Al Shifa Hospital has the diamond accreditation of Accreditation Canada International (ACI).
AUM Central Clinic includes two large clinics that can accommodate a big number of patients on a daily basis. In addition to having the best medical equipment and continuously monitoring the medicines’ validity, AUM ensures having the highest standards of cleanliness in its central clinic.
AUM Counseling and Wellness Center
AUM Counseling and Center offers a variety of and wellbeing and psychological support and services to students at AUM. This can be through frequent coaching and continuous follow up. Short-term and long-term counseling options are available to students. Additional resources are offered as reading and activities material. AUM students can seek the services as walk in visitors or as faculty and staff referrals.
AUM Student Counseling and Wellness Center offers individual one-to-one counseling to support students as they work through personal challenges that affect their ability to succeed at the university and in other areas of their lives.
Sessions are in person and offer students the opportunity to talk one-on-one with a counselor to explore, understand, and work through personal issues.
Students can seek counseling to deal with issues, such as physical: Diabetes, Pregnancy, Polycystic ovary syndrome, Epilepsy, Cardiovascular complications, Chronic pain, Asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases.
Other issues include psychological and mental disorders.
The Center provides a number of trainings on campus, including health and wellness prevention, awareness programs, mental health campaigns, and workshops aimed to further support and educate students struggling with minor or major physical and mental health complications.
Awareness Campaigns
Annual “Pinktober” Campaign and Breast Cancer Awareness Initiatives at AUM
During October 2023, AUM organized events and activities to raise awareness about Breast Cancer as part of its annual "Pinktober" Campaign. The campaign’s primary objective was spreading awareness and explaining the main causes of the disease and ways to prevent it, which was done in collaboration with Dar Al Shifa. Health check stations were made available, allowing faculty and staff to monitor their health with the assistance of healthcare specialists.
Breast Cancer Awareness Initiatives at AUM (2022)
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) organized events and activities to raise awareness about Breast Cancer as part of its annual "Pinktober" Campaign.
The campaign aimed at stressing on the importance of raising awareness and early detection, coinciding with international efforts that have taken October as an official month to raise awareness of the disease, which can affect both males and females alike.
In addition to the campaign’s primary objective of spreading awareness and explaining the main causes of the disease and ways to prevent it, which was done in collaboration with Dar Al Shifa, the university secured discounts for the MRI Breasts, Mammography and other services for students, faculty members and staff, to encourage them to go and do the check-up.
The students also implemented creative ideas to highlight the importance of raising awareness about breast cancer by participating in many activities such as arts and crafts. The most unique of them was the huge model representing the internationally approved breast cancer awareness logo, where the students used pink blocks to complete the model; as a symbol of unity and support for each other.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month at AUM (2021)
AUM wrapped up the Breast Cancer Awareness month by organizing an event on campus for students and all the AUM community.
The event was done on the third week of October and repeated as well on the fourth week so both groups of students can attend since AUM has adopted a blended learning approach, effective, October 2021.
Because early detection of breast cancer can help fight the disease, mammogram vouchers were distributed to all female students, faculty, and staff who passed by the booths. In addition to having the AUM community wear pink ribbons, interactive games such as arts and crafts were conducted at the booths so that students can demonstrate their creativity while creating more awareness about breast cancer. The booth also featured a huge ribbon where students hand printed on it as a symbol of unity in supporting each other.
2021 marked the sixth Pink October at AUM and this event comes at a time when the latest statistics show that the number of breast cancer cases in Kuwait comprises the highest number across all types of cancer.

It also aims to create the necessary awareness represented in explaining the causes of the disease and ways to prevent it, as the university was keen to cooperate with Dar Al-Shifa Hospital to obtain a reduction in the value of mammography, for students, faculty members and staff, to motivate them to do examinations. Routine related to early detection, which is the most important method of treatment. The students presented creative ideas to highlight the importance of paying attention to breast cancer awareness, which was represented in participating in many activities, such as arts and crafts, within the edifice of AUM University, where the most distinguished was the huge model that represents the globally adopted breast cancer awareness slogan, where the students put their fingerprints on the model as a symbol of unity and support for each other. Statistics that breast cancer in Kuwait is the most common type of cancer, accounting for approximately 23 percent of all cancers among men and women, and 41 percent of all cancers in women.

It included interactive activities and lectures explaining the causes of the disease and the preventive measures one can take, with emphasis on early detection and screening methods. The university also hosted a dietitian to give the AUM community tips on a healthy diet that helps prevent the disease, and a nurse to train students on self-examination among other important prevention methods. The students also conducted immediate checkups for vital indicators such as pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, etc.
Promoting a culture of health and wellbeing for its students and everyone on campus has always been at the center of all social responsibility initiatives undertaken by the university. Such initiatives also come at a time when the latest statistics show that the breast cancer mortality rate in Kuwait is higher than the global average due to late detection.
