The American University of the Middle East (AUM) hosted the AACSB International - Continuous Improvement Review (CIR) Seminar on 4 and 5 October 2022, in the presence of faculty and staff from the College of Business Administration and the Quality Assurance and Institutional Advancement Department.

The seminar was facilitated by Ihsan Zakri, Regional Head, Middle East and Africa at AACSB International; and focused on the Continuous Improvement Review (CIR) process, which is designed for AACSB-accredited schools to develop a deeper understanding of the philosophy behind the CIR process. Attendees learned how to undergo a successful CIR through interactive discussions on the CIR process and each component of it.

It is worth noting that AACSB is the oldest global accrediting institution for colleges of business. Moreover, the accreditation itself is a mark of excellence in teaching business administration programs.

The American University of the Middle East (AUM) revealed its vision to advance AI and innovation in the region during an inauguration event at the AUM Cultural Center on June 5, 2022. 

During the event, AUM and the AMENA Center at UC Berkeley, one of the top universities globally in the field of AI, announced their cooperation to launch the AI & Innovation Center at AUM. 

The launch event also featured student and alumni graduation projects related to robotics and artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality experiences, and a ceremony at the Opera House that was attended by AUM Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Fahad AlOthman, university management and faculty, senior students, alumni, Sophia the robot from Hanson Robotics, and Dariush Zahedi, founder and director of the AMENA Center for Entrepreneurship and Development at UC Berkeley, who joined virtually.

In his speech, Mr. Fahad AlOthman announced: “At AUM, we strive to create environments that allow students to gain new skills through projects, team works, and learning by doing.”

He also noted: “We previously launched the Innovation Center, Robotics Center, and Business Innovation Center, which were a great success, and today, we add the AI Center, which will be a milestone for the region.” 

“The opportunities created through this Center aim to make our youth readier for the world of tomorrow, to embrace future technologies especially that AI is becoming integrated into all disciplines and professions. Hence, the center will create more opportunities for our students and graduates. Moreover, the center will also help students and graduates from Business and Engineering in implementing their projects and turning them into reality.” AlOthman added. 

Dariush Zahedi, founder and director of the AMENA Center for Entrepreneurship and Development at UC Berkeley, announced that the AI hub will be the nexus for creating the next wave of innovative industry-defining companies emerging from the middle east region. “To design and develop the AI innovation hub project in the gulf region, we are delighted to have entered into a strategic partnership with the American University of the Middle East, one of the top universities in the Arab world in Engineering and Business Studies.” He added. 

Mr. Zahedi also noted that together, Berkeley and AUM will train and launch the careers of the next generation of Kuwaiti and regional enterprising and transformational change agents. He also highlighted that the partnership will serve as a bridge between AUM and Silicon Valley.

AUM hosts the “Higher Education Summit for a Meaningful Future” for universities in the Middle East and Africa region, at the AUM Conference Center, in the presence of elite academics and leaders in the field of higher education from all over the world.

AUM students participated in the Chemistry Souq 🧪 event, which varied between scientific lectures and workshops on environmental sustainability in the Cultural Center ♻️ and fun chemistry experiments next to AUM Lake 🏝️

The EduData Summit 2023, organized by QS Quacquarelli Symonds and hosted by the American University of the Middle East (AUM), brought together experts and stakeholders to explore the value and prospects of higher education institutions. The summit held in San Francisco during May 2023.

World Diabetes Day Awareness Yearly Campaigns Initiatives at AUM 2021 - 2020

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, AUM runs a series of activities on campus in order to raise awareness about the disease and encourage healthy living among the campus community.

According to International Diabetes Federation (IDF), around 1 in 6 adults (73 million) are living with Diabetes and the number is expected to reach 95 million by 2030. It is also worth noting that 1 in 3 adults living with diabetes is undiagnosed as per IDF. In this respect, AUM partners with Dar Al Shifa hospital who conducts glucose tests on campus.

Since diet and physical activities are considered important pillars when it comes to diabetes care, AUM collaborates with famous diet centers in Kuwait and offers a dedicated space during the event. Dietitians from these centers answer students’ questions and offer them advice on how to combat diseases with a healthy diet.

On the athletic front, a cross-fit challenge are conducted at the football pitch where students competed in different forms of sports such as squats, pushups, lunges, jumping jacks, crunches, running, and hurdles. Nurses from the AUM clinic are available in case any injury happened. From nutrition and exercise to medical care and advice about handling complications, the community benefits from the opportunity to learn more about diabetes and healthy diet from experts across the country.

 AUM organized an interactive workshop for faculty and staff under the title of “Cholesterol Myths and Facts” on Monday 1st of May 2023.

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Roula Barake, Assistant Professor at the Liberal Arts Department at AUM; and focused basically on raising awareness of some myths and facts about cholesterol, in which attendees learned more about the health benefits of cholesterol, the good and bad cholesterol, cholesterol management by diet, medications for cholesterol and lifestyle interventions; all through interactive discussions.

Many of us don’t realize that high cholesterol can lead to higher risks for a heart attack or stroke. So, this workshop helped to learn how one can make healthy lifestyle changes to reduce the levels of risks and improve his/her health.

The American University of the Middle East (AUM) organized the final round of STARTAPP & INNOVATE competition for high school students in Kuwait. The competition took place at AUM Cultural Center.

 

Competition participants showcased their communication skills and their ability to discuss their views in a clear and convincing fashion before a panel of experts.

 

A commitment to raising the bar in higher educational

Head of AUM student affairs Amal Taqi noted that the American University of the Middle East is always seeking to encourage the new generation to find innovative and creative ideas that contribute to the development of Kuwaiti society. She added that high school students have presented projects that demonstrate their ability to excel and find effective solutions to real world problems in both engineering and business.

 

“The American University of the Middle East is keen on raising the level in higher education and motivate Kuwaiti students since they are builders of the future,” Taqi said.

 

For their part, jury members oversaw participants’ work and commanded the presentation and communication skills of high school students who managed to work on their weaknesses and improve their performance in the finals.

 

AUM faculty encouraged students to think in a different and creative way and to maintain their enthusiasm because it is the reason for their excellence and brilliance.

 

Students take a step towards university life

After the jury examined all the projects and ideas, the winners of the competition were announced. Student Reem Al-Azmi won first place, Amna Ashkanani second place, and Deema Al-Shabak third place in the STARTAPP category. Winners of INNOVATE were students Ahmad Al-Dahi in first place, followed by Badreya Al-Abadi in second place, and Ahmad Al-Ansari third place.

 

Student Reem Al-Azmi from Bayan high school, stated that STARTAPP & INNOVATE gave her more confidence and allowed her to discuss her ideas with experts allowing her to further develop her idea and improve her app.

 

On the other hand, student Amnah Ashkanani from Aljabriya High school considered that the workshops conducted at AUM helped them build structure for their ideas, and helped them improve their individual skills and further motivated them to finding scientific and logical solutions to problems that society faces.

 

Dema aslhabak from Altahera high school, said experiencing university life at AUM was an opportunity for her to see the how her life would be at AUM, and that this experience was a way for her to further challenge herself.

 

Student Ahmad Al-Dahi from Jassem Al-kharafi high school expressed how proud he was for winning the competition and said that this will further motivate him to work on and improve his project and eventually one day make it a reality. Al-Dahi said he was impressed with his visit to AUM camput as he was not expecting the campus to be this big and equipped with such advanced technology.

 

Student Badreya Al-Abadi from Al-Sharqeya high School that the most important thing she gained from this experience is in the networking factor of the competition, as she got to meet students from different school with different innovative ideas allowing her to share her experience with others and gain knowledge from different participants.

 

Ahmed Al-Ansari, from Ahmed Al-Rubaie High School, said that the competition encouraged him for the next phase in his life and going to university as he aspires to establish his own company in the future.

 

Finally, students thanked the American University of the Middle East for this experience and confidence in their vision and aspirations, and for the support they were given to develop their capabilities.

The American University of the Middle East (AUM) concluded the semi-finals of the “STARTAPP & INNOVATE” competition, launched for high school students in Kuwait. The competition aims to encourage the new generation to innovate and create effective ideas that lead to community development. 

The competition consists of two categories: "STARTAPP"; for mobile application business ideas, and "INNOVATE"; for creative ideas in all engineering fields. 

Within five days, the university received about 500 ideas and projects from students from various schools in Kuwait. The best ideas and projects were selected to compete in the semi-finals held at the AUM cultural center, Twenty-eight participants qualified for the finals, 11 for the first category and 17 for the second one. 

A jury of expert professors in engineering and business administration chose the best projects and ideas. The panel looked at criteria like: creativity where the idea is judged on the level of innovation, problem solving and added value, practicality, and responding to market need.

 

Dbeissy: STARTAPP & INNOVATE reveals Kuwaiti youth innovation potential

The head of AUM cultural center Rasha Dbeissy talked about the importance of the competition, which was organized for the first time at the university, to encourage and support young Kuwait high school students to submit and develop their business app and innovative ideas. The competition encourages students to seeking excellence in engineering and business management, she added. The competition also aims to invest the creative energies that contribute to creating a distinguished generation of Kuwaitis that can lead towards a better future.

 

Dbeissy said: “The high number of turnout at the competition is a sign that the young Kuwaiti generation has the potential to innovate and initiate business ideas that have a positive contribution to the Kuwait community”. 

Unlocking students’ innovation spirit

On their part, participating high school students found an opportunity to demonstrate their creative abilities and to explore university life.

 

Student Ahmad Al-Dahi from Jassem Al-Kharafi High School presented a project to help people lost on land or at sea with the aim of reducing the number of victims in such incidents. Al-Dahi said this experience gave him more self-confidence and support to develop and improve his project.

 

Students Duha Al-Saidan and Hissa Al-Atibi from the the Anisah Binti Khubaib School presented an application that facilitates interaction between companies. Al-Atibi said that innovation is now a basic need to build an effective communication network.

 

Student Abdullah Al-Hammadi from the Abdullah Al Ahmad Al-Sabah Secondary School introduced his application for reducing traffic accidents in Kuwait. He noted that this experience encourages the Kuwaiti student to be socially responsible.

 

Eligible participants will have the opportunity to develop their scientific and technical skills through workshops that will be held on AUM campus where they will get to visit and work at AUM laboratories and facilities under the supervision and guidance of the university's professors.


Our AUM’ers participated in the Open Day of the Business Innovation Center 📊 the students were awarded for their achievements in the Business Clubs during semester. And also, the students participated in Clue games to enhance and develop their teamwork skills 👏🏽

AUM invited all the high school students to the campus to get to know all the majors we provide and also to take a tour around the beautiful campus exploring all the facilities.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the State of Kuwait and South Korea, AUM hosted a ceremony for the South Korean Embassy on Thursday November 14, 2019 at its cultural center. It included a performance by the Kukkiwon demonstration team coming from the International Academy of Taekwondo, and was performed in the presence of the Korean ambassador HONG Youngki, as well as a number of ambassadors to the State of Kuwait, and members of the Korean Expat Community in Kuwait.


As part of AUM’s effort to promote culture and Arabic storytelling and strengthen it locally and internationally, AUM partnered with Al-Multaqa Prize and became the prize custodian for the fourth edition of the prize (2018-2019).

Under AUM’s leadership of the prize, 209 short story collections were received from 22 countries.

After the university announced the longlist and then the shortlist for the prize, a final ceremony was held at the AUM Cultural Center with the participation of international literary and public figures from the region who came to Kuwait with a special invitation from AUM.

AUM organizes a Cultural Week on campus that was open to the public.

On November 27 and 28, over 500 alumni returned to campus during the alumni reunion event at the AUM Cultural Center, in the presence of the University President Dr. Georges Yahchouchi and faculty members.

During the reunion, Dr. Yahchouchi talked about how everything at AUM is done with a lot of attention and passion to provide students with a life-changing learning experience.

“As you walk today around the campus, you see AUM expanding and what you get to witness is just the tip of the iceberg. There is an invisible part that you do not get to see, yet you get to sense its impact“, Dr. Yahchouchi said.

The reunion saw our alumni recollecting old memories and making new ones while catching up with each other and with their professors after a long time. They also highlighted the important role the university played in their lives equipping them with the necessary skills to excel, especially at the professional and social levels. The alumni advised students to set their priorities and stay dedicated and committed to their goals.

Following the event, AUM organized interactive activities and a dinner at the Cultural Center for alumni, faculty and staff.


On May 24-25, 2021, AUM organized its seventh career fair and it was conducted in a virtual format. The event was attended by students, alumni, and representatives from the public and private sector from more than 40 local and intentional leading companies.  The career fair was also open to students and alumni of the American College of the Middle East.


Times Higher Education Event

AUM co-hosted the inaugural launch of the first Times Higher Education Arab Universities Ranking, bringing together hundreds of educational institutions from the Arab World to cherish excellence and celebrate the strong roots of higher education in the region.
