AUM Efforts to Empower Women in Fields in which they are Under-Represented
AUM University in Kuwait is actively committed to empowering women in fields where they are historically underrepresented. Recognizing the importance of gender diversity and equal opportunities, the university has implemented several initiatives to bridge the gender gap in various academic and professional domains. AUM encourages female students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields and offers support networks, mentorship programs, and scholarships to facilitate their success in these disciplines. Additionally, the university actively promotes women's participation in leadership roles across campus organizations and academic societies, fostering a culture of inclusion and paving the way for women to excel in areas where they have been traditionally underrepresented. These efforts reflect AUM's dedication to achieving gender equality and promoting diverse participation in all fields of study and employment.

The American University of the Middle East (AUM) concluded its AUM Startup Challenge 2022 by organizing an event at the Cultural Center on February 21, 2022.
The event was attended by faculty, staff, students, and special guest Mr. Jamie Kendrioski, Director of the Babson Collaborative for Entrepreneurship Education, who joined virtually.
The AUM Startup Challenge is the first phase of the Babson Global Student Challenge and results in three winning teams competing in the semi-finals and finals along with other participating universities from more than 16 countries from all over the world. AUM’s annual organization of the AUM Startup Challenge and its engagement in Babson’s Global Student Challenge comes as part of the university’s efforts to expose students further to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and challenge them to think of these goals in the context of business opportunities.
The event started with an exhibition where 25 teams of students who have been working on their business idea for months participated with a dedicated booth and explained to attendees about their project and how it helps advance one or more of the SDGs.
A jury comprising of subject matter experts from AUM faculty voted for the top six teams based on specific rubrics. All attendees also had the chance to vote for the best three teams.
Following the exhibition, the elected six teams presented their ideas on stage and the top three were selected by the jury.
The team that ranked first, second, and third were awarded 5,000 KWD, 3,000 KWD, and 1,500 KWD, respectively, as part of AUM’s support to help them turn their startup idea into reality.
At the end of the event, Mr. Jamie Kendrioski delivered a speech where he congratulated all the participating teams and talked about the collaborations between AUM and Babson. “Babson and AUM share a belief that entrepreneurship is not only about starting a business but is also a mindset applicable to any industry that when put to its best use truly can advance social, economic, and environmental causes, and change the world,” Kendrioski said as part of his speech.
Kendrioski also announced that the winning team of the Babson Global Student challenge will receive a scholarship to attend “Babson Build”, an immersive and experiential one-week-long entrepreneurship program that takes place at Babson in the United States in July. Participants join a global cohort of peers, experience Babson’s unique ecosystem, and learn to think and act more entrepreneurially.
Kendrioski concluded his speech with a special announcement on behalf of the American University of the Middle East that the team from AUM that reaches the finals will receive a scholarship to attend Babson Build.
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) participated as a Strategic Sponsor in RoadRush, the biggest event in Kuwait for female professional racers as part of the university's social responsibility to empower women and support talent.
RoadRush is the first women’s racing team in the Middle East, established in 2011, by five female Kuwaiti women. Every year, RoadRush organizes a big festival that comprises racing and motorsports challenges for female professional drivers, in addition to a concert and family activities.
The objective behind the annual festival and the RoadRush community is to showcase women’s potential in areas such as extreme sports and to empower female talent by giving them a platform to showcase their skills in motorsports.
It is worth mentioning that AUM Faculty Gokce Sincer also participated as a professional racer in the RoadRush challenge.
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) participated as a main sponsor in the first Kuwait Electric Road Show that took place at Murooj on December 2, 3, and 4.
Titled “Green Kuwait”, the main purpose behind the event is to support cleaner energy and reduce carbon emissions by spreading awareness about the new electric and hybrid vehicles available in Kuwait.
AUM Spokesperson and Executive Manager, Massar Bineid, announced to the media during the event: “We are present at the Electric Vehicles Show in Al-Morouj to support innovative projects related to alternative energy and renewable energy, as the implementation of such projects is beneficial for sustainable development, the economy, and the environment. At AUM, we embrace this approach as we integrate sustainability into all activities, especially teaching, academic research, and students’ projects and activities.”
“We also took this opportunity to highlight graduation projects done by our students that are related to the theme of the show and innovation at large. It is also worth noting that we have a second booth located at the entrance that is solar-powered.” She added.
AUM students were present at the event in their dedicated booth where they interacted with visitors and showcased graduation projects related to sustainable development and alternative and renewable energy. An example of the projects that were displayed during the event are highlighted hereunder:
WifiBot lane detection algorithm
This project demonstrates a Self-Driving Lane Detection technique. It uses Image Processing to detect the appropriate features of a road and estimates the curve present on this road. This curve value can be used to steer the vehicle in the correct direction.
Long-range Communication with Drone
The project is about using an industrial scale aerial-drone for long-range communication capability for data transfer in search and rescue operations in an environment without GPS communication. The drone will also be installed with a soft-gripping mechanism, which is used to collect samples.
· Small Solar Cars
· Small scale solar rovers that run using solar power in a designed track.
· Balloon based small satellites network for secure communication
This project proposes a cost-efficient solution to link areas with limited coverage to existing communication networks. The idea is to use a network of balloon-based small cube satellites that enable the transfer of communication signals from one point to another point in a secure way.
Bionic Arm for Amputee Cases
A customizable wearable robust 3D printed bionic arm has been designed and implemented for a right arm amputee case. The hand is controlled using Electromyography signals (Muscles Sensors). An artificial Intelligent algorithm is used to precisely control hand actions.
Super Anthony Fighter Robot
Two manual controlled super Anthony robots that allow users to experience controlling a humanoid robot in a sumo match.
