The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American University of the Middle East, Fahd Al-Othman, announced the opening of the College of Graduate Studies and the offering of a master's degree in engineering disciplines, considering that the launch of the college is a strategic step, and it is the result of the university's continuous efforts to deepen scientific research in the fields of engineering, and achieve sustainable progress.
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) revealed its vision to advance AI and innovation in the region during an inauguration event at the AUM Cultural Center on June 5, 2022.
During the event, AUM and the AMENA Center at UC Berkeley, one of the top universities globally in the field of AI, announced their cooperation to launch the AI & Innovation Center at AUM.
The launch event also featured student and alumni graduation projects related to robotics and artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality experiences, and a ceremony at the Opera House that was attended by AUM Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Fahad AlOthman, university management and faculty, senior students, alumni, Sophia the robot from Hanson Robotics, and Dariush Zahedi, founder and director of the AMENA Center for Entrepreneurship and Development at UC Berkeley, who joined virtually.
In his speech, Mr. Fahad AlOthman announced: “At AUM, we strive to create environments that allow students to gain new skills through projects, team works, and learning by doing.”
He also noted: “We previously launched the Innovation Center, Robotics Center, and Business Innovation Center, which were a great success, and today, we add the AI Center, which will be a milestone for the region.”
“The opportunities created through this Center aim to make our youth readier for the world of tomorrow, to embrace future technologies especially that AI is becoming integrated into all disciplines and professions. Hence, the center will create more opportunities for our students and graduates. Moreover, the center will also help students and graduates from Business and Engineering in implementing their projects and turning them into reality.” AlOthman added.
Dariush Zahedi, founder and director of the AMENA Center for Entrepreneurship and Development at UC Berkeley, announced that the AI hub will be the nexus for creating the next wave of innovative industry-defining companies emerging from the middle east region. “To design and develop the AI innovation hub project in the gulf region, we are delighted to have entered into a strategic partnership with the American University of the Middle East, one of the top universities in the Arab world in Engineering and Business Studies.” He added.
Mr. Zahedi also noted that together, Berkeley and AUM will train and launch the careers of the next generation of Kuwaiti and regional enterprising and transformational change agents. He also highlighted that the partnership will serve as a bridge between AUM and Silicon Valley.
The American University of the Middle East (AUM) recently upgraded its Robotics Research Center with world-class facilities and equipment to keep abreast of latest advances in technology and science.
The AUM Robotics Research center consists of five main areas; a Fabrication Lab, Motion Capture and Aerial Lab, Humanoid Research Lab, Robotics Club Workshop, and an Arena.
The center aims to enhance student interest in artificial intelligence and robotics, and contributes to advance robotic systems, underlying technology components, and robotics applications through research and educational programs that are interdisciplinary in nature and based on a systems approach.
The center serves as a support platform for AUM students that helps increase further their skills and competitiveness in local and international events where they won first places in past years in different competitions such as: Microsoft’s Imagine Cup in Kuwait 2015, RobotChallenge in China 2017 organized yearly by INNOC in collaboration with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Economy (BMWF). The RobotChallenge saw 1976 competitors from 212 educational institutions including prestigious universities from 26 countries around the world such as Austria, China, Mexico, Japan, Russia, Korea and Poland, participated in the competition. Moreover, AUM students took over the IEEE GCC Robot Competition SYP in Bahrain 2017, winning first place over participants from different GCC universities.AUM students also racked up several wins in Robot Challenges held in Kuwait, proving a high level of skills and creative ideas over students from both public and private local universities.
Additionally, The Robotics Research Center at AUM provides students with the latest technologies for testing, operating and innovating in their engineering projects, through the humanoid lab equipped with latest humanoid research development platforms such as NAO, Pepper and UXA 90 Robot builder, and the Motion Capture and Aerial Lab equipped with; the latest monitoring and data collection system 16 Vicon.
In addition to the center being a premises for research and science aimed at developing Robotic technology, international standards applied at the center allow it to host local and international competitions where students get to innovate and compete in a positive and well-guided environment.
