SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

measuring/tracking pay scale gender equity

Within AUM, the salary scale of employees is strictly managed and supervised, and in the event of any inconvenience, discrimination or error in the payment of salaries, the university has the proper controls and protocols in place.

There exists a rigorous oversight and management system for employee salaries. In case of any discrepancies, discrimination, or payroll errors, the university has established comprehensive controls and protocols to address and rectify such issues promptly.

Within the human resources department, there is a sub-department in charge of overseeing compliance with equality within AUM.

Aware of the great social challenge represented by the place of women in the professional world, the University has decided to act to promote equal opportunities between women and men.

The Equity department's goal is to offer all university students the attractiveness of a balanced community and to promote equality between women and men for all categories of staff and students.

-        To deepen the knowledge of inequalities by establishing indicators and identifying the experience developed by teacher-researchers in our establishment.

-        To constitute a network of referents in the different centers of the university in order to understand the diversity of situations and support actions in the field.

-        To better support women in their professional career by working in particular on the issue of promotions.

-        Include the theme of gender equality in the professional training offer;

-        Inform our university community by communicating about the various measures implemented.

Likewise, strict control is maintained over the salaries paid to employees, taking into account the possibility of non-conformity if there is a case of dissatisfaction with respect to the salary.

The salary gap is usually null in several cases, however, it has always been stipulated in the council of the university, the importance of giving women the same job opportunities within our institution.

The purpose of the human resources department is to deal with any doubts or non-conformities regarding workers' salaries.

AUM is committed to helping students and faculty increase their interest in the area of gender equity, to enact laws and to help in the process of creating equal pay, therefore within AUM we enact and help attend different events where thoughts are exchanged and where students and faculty can attend and participate in the change that is taking place.

The American University of the Middle East (AUM) participated in the 10th International Conference on Women Leaders in Science, Technology and Engineering (WLSTE+10) hosted by the Kuwait Foundation for the Development of Sciences (KFSA). The conference was held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, in the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development in Kuwait in collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the US State Department.

AUM faculty, Dr. Elda Cina and Dr. Wiem Abdelbaki, attended the conference as well as AUM students Razan Al Far and Rand Younes, who had the opportunity to share their future plans with other participants, and take part in the “Starting Career Outside Academia” workshop held during the conference.

AUM‘s participation in the conference comes in view of its firm belief in the role of women in leadership, and the success women inspire in the different fields of science. AUM’s vision for a strong community stands on the importance of empowering women and allowing them access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education so that they can lead successful roles in any sector and industry.

AUM’s continuous efforts in developing an educated and responsible generation answer an educational philosophy that encourages women to showcase their scientific skills and proficiency so they can have a prosperous career and help build a better future.

The conference focused on emerging insights that can motivate sustainable solutions and expand women networking platforms in Kuwait and around the world.
